In Your Service,
SHERIFFS OATH OF OFFICE
“I do solemnly swear or affirm, that I will support the Constitution of the United States, and the Constitution of the State of Idaho, and that I will faithfully discharge the duties of Sheriff, according to the best of my ability.”
Law enforcement for Boundary County has some unique challenges. Not only does Boundary County share an International Border with Canada, but also borders the two neighboring states, Washington and Montana. This means that our county has International and intra-state travelers and commercial trade throughout the year. Boundary County has two large forests, Kanisku National Forest and Kootenai National Forest and Wildlife Refuge along with thousands of acres of heavily forested private, State and Federal lands. Due to limited resources, Boundary County has additional challenges, which requires coordination, cooperation and intentional plans of action within our county, our public safety partners and neighboring jurisdictions.
The Sheriff is responsible for law enforcement, the jail, 911, driver’s licensing and each of their operations and budgets. Most importantly, the Sheriff is accountable to the people of Boundary County.
“The Sheriff of Boundary County’s primary responsibility is to protect and defend the Constitutions of the United States and the Great State of Idaho – which includes our right to bear arms and be secure against unreasonable searches and seizures.”
- Jon VanGesen

“I encountered Jon VanGesen many times. He was responsible for getting me off the streets more than once. But Jon is not what I was expecting as a police officer. He always treated me decent regardless of why we were talking. Also, he was not ashamed to share his faith with me and try to steer me in a better direction. I must tell you that it did have an impact on my life.
I became a believer in prison and have been clean and out of trouble for many, many years. I am now a pastor, biblical counselor and have started and directed two different Christian recovery programs for addicts in my community.
He has positively impacted many other people I know as well. I just wanted to take some time to tell you that you have a good opportunity to add an amazing leader to your Sheriff's Office.”
